The COVID-19 lockdown brought many unexpected changes to people's lives, but for Dr Sushma Mahajan, it marked the beginning of a remarkable artistic journey. ‘During the Covid lockdown, I started my painting journey. It was a chance discovery, and for the last four years, I have been painting nonstop,’ Dr Mahajan reflects.
Transitioning from the medical field to the world of art was no easy feat. ’When I started off, transitioning from stethoscope to a paintbrush was not easy. It was full of challenges. Initially, I struggled to create something presentable,’ she shares.
Dr Mahajan's skills had significantly improved, and her paintings began to reflect her keen attention to detail and precision—qualities honed in her medical career. ’We are patient with details, and precision is crucial. So, I was naturally drawn to realism. I create watercolours with realism, and I am known for my vibrant and bold colours because I feel they lift your mood.’
In her latest exhibition, Dr Mahajan showcases twelve paintings inspired by temple art. ’Temple art is so beautiful, and it is very difficult to capture that beauty in paintings. But I have tried my best,’ she says with a humble confidence.
Balancing her demanding career as a radiologist with her passion for painting required discipline and determination. ’If you find something that feels like the purpose of your life, you will make time for it in your schedule. I am so addicted to painting that I have to find time for it. With discipline, I have fine-tuned my schedule to ensure I have two hours each day to paint.’
Dr Mahajan's journey over the past four years has taught her valuable lessons about personal fulfilment and the importance of discovering hidden talents. ’Whether a homemaker or a professional, every woman has something within her that needs to be discovered—a hidden talent or passion. Don't give up. Try to find that, and you'll be surprised at how your life changes and becomes enriched.’
