Sustainable swimwear is doing the rounds. Here’s why you should care and everything you need to know!
Why is swimwear crucial to sustainability?
Because of functionality, swimwear is usually made of nylon or other fabrics made from polyamide—in simpler terms, plastic-derived fibres. Deriving these petroleum-based fabrics is heavy on your carbon footprint. Like any other such fabric, every time these are washed, microplastics get released and end up in water resources, which, in turn, causes water pollution. In fact, each time you take a dip in the pool or the sea, microfibers are directly released in these water bodies. This is why it’s extremely crucial for swimwear to be sustainable.
What should you look out for?
In spite of nylon not being eco-friendly, it’s almost impossible to use natural fabrics for swimwear, owing to fit issues as well as basic functionality. So, how else can swimwear be sustainable? The answer is recycled fabrics. Look for recycled nylon or polyester on your swimwear clothing labels. Since these are made out of recycled plastic pieces, they cause less damage while being produced than regular polyester. Econyl, a fabric made out of recycled fishing nets and other landfill waste, is another thing to look out for in your swimwear.
