As the need and demand for sustainability in fashion are on the rise, one may feel more of a need to educate themselves on the topic just as much. As a new student set out on a career journey or just as someone looking to upskill, here are some resources in the country that can help you understand sustainable fashion better.
National Institute of Fashion (NIFT) X UNEP
India’s National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) launched a general elective course on ‘Design Innovation for Sustainable Fashion’ last year. Looking at the overwhelming response to the course, NIFT’s director general, Shantmanu said in a statement that there were possibilities to make ‘Design Innovation for Sustainable Fashion’ a mandatory course for students or even a certificate or diploma course in the future.
Indian Institute of Sustainability
The Indian Institute of Sustainability in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is dedicated to education in all things sustainability. Its Integrated MBA in Digital Marketing and Sustainability, while not particularly focusing on fashion, is sure to educate and promote an understanding of changing consumer attitudes and behaviour in the context of a capitalist market economy, including current unsustainable lifestyles and consumption and how marketing can create value sustainably, the role of marketing and marketers in meeting net-zero objectives, incorporating sustainability into marketing activities and strategies. These may apply to you in case you have an interest in a marketing role in a sustainable fashion.
National Institute of Fashion
National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) also offers a Post Graduate Diploma in Textile Crafts & Sustainable Product Design (TCSPD). Centred around traditional crafts, which are inherently more sustainable than conventional production practises of today, combined with a focus on sustainable product design, this one-year course can be just what you need if your interest lies in the creation aspects of sustainable fashion.
National Institute of Design
One of the resources available at India’s National Institute of Design includes its textile design weaving labs. The weaving labs are aimed at not only textile education but also to sensitise students towards the concerns of the traditional handloom industry, sustainable practices and environmental issues. The lab has more than fifty handlooms which include AVM loom, ARM loom, table loom, dobby loom, jacquard loom and leno loom, increasing awareness of the more traditional crafts of the industry.
