Indian fashion is often believed to be restricted to the conventional Indian silhouettes and way of dressing. But there are a host of designers and home-grown brands that have been successful in staying globally relevant by the amalgamation of Indian and global aesthetics. Here are some Indian designers that have helped put India on the map of global fashion.
Papa Don’t Preach
Apart from having international personalities like Chrissy Teigen, Mindy Kaling, Deepica Mutyala and more sporting the brand’s creations recently for Diwali festivities, the brand’s black and white number was also seen on a recent magazine cover, worn by American singer Loren Gray. But it’s not just the mix of Indian and western aesthetics that have kept the brand t geographically relevant, it’s also the ethos of inclusivity and diversity. In July this year, the brand’s yellow and purple number was sported by the non-binary writer and artist Alok Menon.

Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla
While the designer duo’s Indian wear is just to die for, their attention to detail and craftsmanship have often reflected on the International radar as well. Spotted on Beyonce in a Coldplay music video, as well as for several live performances, celebrities like Gwen Stefani and Carrie Underwood have also worn Abu-Sandeep ensembles for their live shows. Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Sarah Brown have also worn the duo’s outfits.

Rahul Mishra
Rahul Mishra is the first Indian designer to showcase at the Paris Haute Couture Week. The designer, who is known for his use of traditional Indian crafts, showcased at the international fashion week for 11 seasons and also won the International Woolmark Prize back in 2014. Mishra is best known for his hand-embroidered floral motifs and whimsical creations based on his love for nature. Zendaya also became the first global style icon to wear Rahul Mishra's creations which were a part of the couture 2020 collection.

Sabyasachi
This list would be pretty much incomplete without mentioning every bride’s favourite, Sabyasachi. While the designer’s popularity caught on at lightning speed over the last couple of years, Mukherjee made keen moves to stay globally present quite early on, showcasing at the "Grand Winner Award" at the Mercedes Benz New Asia Fashion week in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week, Miami Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week as well as London Fashion Week. Additionally, the designer has also collaborated with several international designers and brands like Pottery Barn, Thomas Goode & Co and Christian Louboutin. Recently, the designer launched his jewellery line at the New York store, Bergdorf Goodman.

Vaishali Shadangule
This year, Vaishali Shadangule became the first Indian woman designer to showcase at Paris Fashion Week. The designer took the opportunity to highlight her designing prowess and larger than life sculpted creations on the international runway. The Mumbai-based designer is known for her use of classic Indian weaves and unique silhouettes .
