Who is Frida Kahlo?

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist known best for her paintings, majorly self-portraits and paintings that were often inspired by nature and Mexican artefacts. Today, Kahlo is one of the world’s most inspiring feminist icons for the way she broke gender stereotypes and how she embraced her uni-brow and moustache. In her self-portraits around the 1940s, she often depicted herself in masculine costumes along with her facial hair, a departure from beauty standards that were deemed ideal at the time.
The PUMA X Frida Kahlo Collection
Activewear brand PUMA’s latest PUMA X Frida Kahlo collection brings together the iconic artist’s art and high-performance activewear. The collection features floral motifs inspired by Kahlo’s use of flowers in her art. Kahlo often added flowers as a part of hairdos in many of her self-portraits as an ode to her Mexican heritage.
The collection includes training jackets, t-shirts, sports bras, training leggings and even a pair of running shoes- all adorning floral details as prints as well as embroideries on black and coral hues. Many pieces, including the collection’s fully-floral, reversible training jacket, also feature a quote by Kahlo embroidered on them: “No es pecado ser original” which literally translates to “It is not a sin to be original”. The collection’s aesthetic is inspired by Kahlo’s unique blend of modern-yet-romantic use of floral details in her artworks. The use of four-way stretch material and moisture-wicking technology make the collection high-function along with artistic.
A natural icon uniquely representing freedom of expression and women empowerment, Kahlo is an ideal pick for Puma’s Female Artists series which celebrates strong female figures from the creative arts.
