Here are some things you might be doing on a day-to-day basis that is harming the environment a lot more than you knew.
Washing Clothes Too Often
Every time something synthetic is washed, it releases microplastics into our water resources. These microplastics are not only polluting but also disrupt aquatic life on a large scale. These microplastics may even enter the food chain while consuming seafood, in turn also disrupting human life and causing diverse health problems. So what can you do? Try washing synthetic clothes less often. These could be made of fabrics like polyester or nylon.
Buying Too Often
Fast fashion has made us accustomed to getting our hands on the newest style in the shortest period of time. Very often, filtered versions of runway styles and trends are available for one to buy at the nearest store, or online. While this is great to satisfy all our style cravings, the environment bears the brunt of it all. Yes, buying the next new thing is fun, but take a moment before you add to cart and reconsider if you really need it, or will wear it for a long time. If not, you’re better off without that new trendy piece.
Buying Without Checking
While buying less plays a huge role in reducing your fashion footprint, another factor to take into account is what your garment is made of. This is where you can start the change. Fabrics like organic cotton, linen, handwoven silk, cotton or khadi fare better on the sustainable fashion meter. These are materials you can look for in your product tags before you buy.
Throwing Instead Of Fixing
No one wants to hold on to damaged clothes, but before dismissing unwanted pieces, give them a good look. A ripped hem or broken buttons are super easy to fix at home. If your clothes have become loose or tight, a small trip to the tailor is all you need to get the right fit. Your clothes are much better off in your wardrobe than in a landfill.
