Fashion retailer Urban Outfitters has announced its partnership with fabric recycler FabScrap to help combat fashion’s waste problem. Urban Outfitters is facilitating FabScraps expansion to a new location in Philadelphia, USA along with a working capital grant. Urban Outfitters’ association with the non-profit organisation goes back to 2019 where FabScrap facilitated the former in recycling its fabric waste. In a statement about FabCrap’s expansion to Philadelphia, Frank J. Conforti, Co-President and COO at Urban Outfitters said, “Philadelphia is a perfect location to expand due to local demand for service and many relationships with design and art universities and nonprofits in the region.”
Luxury retailer Nordstrom has also joined hands with FabScrap to help address the fabric waste problem. Nordstrom has committed to contribute 1 million dollars in corporate grants to the textile recycling initiative with its’s partnership with FabScrap. This support will also allow Fabscrap to improve the way they share textile waste diversion data with every partner and with the public. Nordstrom also supports another recycling organisation, Homeboy Recycling which is a Los Angeles-based organisation. It has also announced the launch of Beautycycle in Canada, a program that will allow customers to return difficult-to-recycle beauty packaging.
Fabscrap is a New York-based organisation that collects, sorts, reuses and recycles textile waste. The non-profit firm also resells scrap packs and recovered fabrics from high-end designers. Fabscrap is currently picking up 8000 pounds of unwanted fabric every week to recycle and reuse. Its partnerships with both Urban Outfitters and Nordstrom will help facilitate its expansion to Philadelphia and to scale up its textile recycling initiative and meet with growing demands for the service they provide.
