If you are looking to give rom-coms and action series/films a break, and are keen to dive deep into the world of detective dramas (quite a fascinating world, we say), here are a few recommendations which could come in handy.
True Detective

Featuring a stellar star cast of Mahershala Ali, Matthew McConaughey, and Woody Harrelson, it not only keeps you on the edge of your seat as the mystery unfolds, it also touches a great deal on human psychology, thus adding to the ‘woah’ factor. We recommend you to watch closely because in addition to the detective solving crimes, they are also mouthing some memorable dialogues.
BBC Sherlock

Originally written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and Doctor John Watson (Martin Freeman) help the police solve the most complex crimes. Add to that, an equally appealing antagonist Moriarty (Andrew Scott), who keeps this duo on their toes. The crisp editing, background score, and to top it, Cumberbatch’s superlative performance makes this one a must watch.
Broadchurch

The series is set in Broadchurch, a fictional English town in Dorset, and focuses on DI Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) and how they go about solving crimes as they battle media attention and mutual suspicion amongst the inhabitants of the town. What keeps you engaged is not only the tightly-knit plot, but also the twists and turns that are encountered as the story unfolds.
Criminal

Each scene in the TV series in confined to three areas in a single location—a police interrogation room, a viewing room, and the hallway and stairwell outside the rooms. What works for the show, apart from this unique setting, is the fact that unlike most in the genre, there are no emergencies or chase sequences, it’s simple a detective interrogating a criminal and what happens during its course. It has been made in four languages— French, Spanish, English, and German.
Jessica Jones

A former superhero, Jessica Jones (played by Krysten Ritter) runs her detective agency, when a sudden turn of events force her to rise again. The show’s approach towards subjects such as sexuality, and depiction of darker topics such as rape, assault and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been praised by critics and masses alike. This one’s unlike anything that Marvel has dabbled in before.
Karamchand

‘Oh! Shut up, Kitty!’ Who can forget this catchphrase? This one, from the evergreen show, Karamchand, is a popular reference even today. Karamchand (essayed by Pankaj Kapur) is a local detective who helps the police solve complex cases. Interestingly, his brightest ideas hit when playing chess. It’s a straightforward detective drama, but its beauty lies in the execution and Kapur’s memorable performance.
