The one con that comes with travelling is that it messes with your skin. And for someone like me who has sensitive skin, it is a nightmare. Even slight deviance from the usual air quality, humidity, temperature, or sun exposure takes a massive toll on my skin. In our attempts to pack light, we often ignore skin care and carry travel-size products, forgetting that our skin has specific needs – these needs may vary based on the travel destination, and most importantly the mode of transport.
Airplanes are not skin-friendly at all, ever notice how your skin feels dry and dehydrated after a flight? Airports and train stations are also breeding ground for germs, leading to adult acne and flare-ups of uncomfortable skin conditions.
Your skincare routine should not be complicated or time-consuming, especially while travelling. Here are 5 ways how you can build a travel-friendly skincare regime.
1. Hydration Is Key
Use serums and moisturisers containing Hyaluronic Acid, even if you have oily skin. You can also keep a hydrating mist on hand for a quick burst of moisture. Always drink lots of water.
2. Keep Your Skin Clean
Carry unscented facial wipes in a zip lock. Use them whenever you feel like your skin is oily and has collected dirt. And avoid touching your face as much as you can.
3. Ditch Layered Makeup & Choose SPF
Avoid layering your skin with concealers, primers, foundation etc while travelling. Use a tinted moisturiser instead, or just stick to your daily day cream and SPF. Carry a tinted lip balm, good eye cream, mascara and your golden.
4. Maintain Your pH levels
pH is used to measure skin acidity on a scale of 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Our skin is covered with a protective hydrolipidic layer the average pH of which is around 4.7. When our skin’s pH rises towards alkaline levels, it triggers a chain reaction that results in trans-epidermal water loss, dehydration, and eventually inflammation.
