As winter approaches, our skincare routines need that little extra TLC to combat the harsh cold weather and dry indoor heating. The transition from fall to winter can be challenging, but with a few adjustments, we can keep our skin healthy, glowing, and hydrated throughout the season. To help you elevate your winter skin routine, we spoke to dermatologist Dr Kiran Sethi to help you make four essential skincare shifts you need to make this season.
- Thicker Moisturiser: One of the most significant shifts you should make as winter sets in, is to switch to a thicker and more hydrating moisturiser. While lightweight, water-based moisturisers are perfect for the summer, they may not be enough to protect your skin during the colder months. Winter air is dry and can sap the moisture from your skin, leading to dryness and irritation. Opt for a rich, creamy moisturiser that contains ingredients like shea butter, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid. These ingredients create a protective barrier on your skin, locking in moisture and preventing water loss. Applying this thicker moisturiser both morning and night will ensure your skin stays soft and supple.
- Sleeping Mask: Sleeping masks are like a magic potion for your skin during winter. These masks provide a deep, intensive treatment while you sleep, helping your skin recover from the day's exposure to cold and wind. Apply a sleeping mask as the last step in your night-time skincare routine, and wake up with a refreshed, hydrated complexion. Look for sleeping masks that contain ingredients like glycerin, niacinamide, and peptides to rejuvenate your skin overnight. They'll work their magic while you catch those zzz's, leaving you with a radiant morning glow.
- Lip Masks: Chapped, dry lips are a common winter woe. Cold winds and low humidity levels can wreak havoc on your delicate lip skin. To keep your lips smooth and plump, invest in a good lip mask or balm. Lip masks are thicker and more nourishing than regular lip balms, providing intense hydration and protection. Apply a generous layer before you get to bed and let it work its magic while you sleep. You'll wake up with soft, moisturised lips. During the day, don't forget to carry a travel-sized lip balm with you to reapply as needed. Look for lip products that contain shea butter, beeswax, and vitamin E to keep your lips in top condition.
- Hydrating Ingredients: To keep your skin looking its best this winter, it's essential to focus on hydration from the inside as well. Make sure you hydrate enough and drink at least 2 litres of water. Incorporate ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides into your skincare routine. These ingredients draw moisture into your skin and help lock it in, keeping your skin hydrated throughout the day. Many hydrating serums and moisturisers contain these ingredients. Hyaluronic acid, in particular, is a star player in retaining moisture. It can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it a must-have for your winter skincare arsenal. You can apply a hyaluronic acid serum after cleansing and before moisturising for an added layer of hydration. For an extra boost, consider using a humidifier in your home to increase the moisture level in the air, which can prevent your skin from drying out.
In a nutshell, taking care of your skin during the winter months doesn't have to be a daunting task. By making these simple skincare shifts, you can ensure your skin stays well-hydrated and healthy. The colder weather may be unforgiving, but with the right skincare routine, you can glow all winter long. So, embrace the winter season feeling smooth, supple, and radiant. Your skin will thank you for it.
