If you’re a newbie to peels and want to try something at home before deep diving into an in-clinic treatment, here’s everything you need to know: Most of the stuff you need is in your kitchen. Before you scour through your pantry to whip up your own DIY concoction, keep in mind the fact that store-bought products and fruit peels can also cause allergic reactions. For best results, it is advised that you patch test the formula before slathering it on your face. That being said, the following ingredients are expert-approved. We reached out to Dr Kiran Sethi, dermatologist and founder of Delhi-based skincare clinic, Isya Derm.
How do fruits help exfoliate skin?
Some fruits like papaya, apples and plums contain enzymes that break down dead skin cells without the need for any downtime. This means not only are they super gentle on the skin but you also won’t be left with dryness or peeling–two things that often happen after an in-clinic treatment. But, this also means that the results you see are temporary and minimal compared to more potent products.
3 easy face peel recipes
Papapa peel – Oily/ Combination skin
“Papaya contains papain enzyme,” explains Dr Sethi. It is also packed with alpha-hydroxy acids that not only moisturise and remove dead skin cells but also improve the appearance of scars.
Mash a few pieces of papaya with a fork and apply the paste to your face. For extra brightening, mix in a teaspoon of honey and let the mask sit for 15 minutes. Wash off with warm water.
Apple peel – Normal skin
“Apples contain alpha-hydroxy acids,” explains Dr Sethi. These help to brighten and tone skin.
Pop half an apple in the blender till you have a puree. Mix in a few tablespoons of yoghurt and apply on the face. Wash off after 15 minutes.
Plum peel – Dry skin
“Like apples, plums also contain AHAs,” explains Dr Sethi. They’re also rich in antioxidants that protect the skin from free radical damage caused by pollution, the sun’s harmful rays and more.
Boil a few plums and then mash them so you have a puree. Add a tablespoon of yoghurt and apply the mix to your face and neck. Wash off after 15 minutes.
Note: Fruit peels made at home should be used immediately. “They shouldn’t be stored as they can be a breeding ground for bacteria,” explains Dr Sethi.
