Festive season mostly lasts for around three months a year but it feels like we spend the remaining nine months preparing and looking forward to it. Now the stress of the season is often obvious, whether it is committing to a hundred things at once or family drama that makes you want to rip your hair out–so it is important to discuss one way to overcome the tension. Enter, mindfulness.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness involves being fully present in the moment and being aware of everything–what you’re doing and where you are, without judging your thoughts. Sounds easy, right? For a second, consider all the modern-day escapism we’re surrounded by like our phones, televisions, and OTT platforms. In the middle of all of this, how is one supposed to practice complete mindfulness? If you’re struggling to be fully present in the moment when it comes to celebrating with your family or even just otherwise, we’re got five tips for you.
Be conscious of how you spend your time and energy
It is super easy to get overwhelmed and overcommit during the festive season. Remember to take some out for yourself and recharge. This looks different for everyone. Some people feel energised after spending time with their friends whereas others prefer some me-time. The whole point of the festive season is to feel your best and that can’t happen if you’re stretched too thin with zero downtime for yourself.
Lend a helping hand, if possible
The best way to deal with stress? Don’t focus on it too much. Helping others and doing things for them is a great way to take your mind off anxiety and tension. When you’re doing good, you feel good. Try it!
Eat mindfully
When was the last time you ate a meal without checking your phone in between? Remember to savour every morsel and take your time while eating. Consume what’s on your plate with gratitude, not guilt.
Try to manage stress
Everyone manages stress in different ways but what truly matters is working through it. If possible, take out time from your day to engage in practices like breathwork, meditation, journaling, yoga or just moving. Take a walk and try to move away from toxic thought patterns that centre on things that irritate or annoy you.
Create new traditions for yourself
No matter what society tells you, you don’t have to conform to traditional practices, especially if your heart isn’t in it! Create new traditions and practices for yourself that involve your near and dear ones and you’re set. That’s what the festive season is all about, joy. Lots and lots of it.
