The days when hyaluronic acid was solely associated with skincare are long gone; now, this hydrating ingredient is carving out a place in the world of haircare. For individuals with dry hair who have yet to integrate a hyaluronic acid product into their routine, it's definitely something to consider.
We spoke with wellness expert and dermatologist Dr. Kiran Sethi to explore the benefits of incorporating this beloved skincare ingredient into your haircare regimen.
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Dr. Kiran Sethi explains, "Hyaluronic acid acts as a humectant, drawing moisture from the air and locking it into your skin or hair." Its ability to retain up to 1000 times its weight in water makes it an exceptional hydrator.
Can it be Used on Hair?
Absolutely. Dr. Kiran confirms, "Hyaluronic acid is suitable for both your hair lengths and scalp, effectively locking in moisture, combating dryness, frizz, and enhancing overall hair texture."
Who Can Benefit from Hyaluronic Acid?
While all hair types can reap the rewards, Dr. Kiran notes that individuals with frizzy, brittle, or dry hair will notice the most significant improvements. Additionally, those with color-treated or damaged hair can use hyaluronic acid to boost texture and hydration levels.
What to keep an eye out for?
Loads of haircare products boast sodium hyaluronate (that’s a part of hyaluronic acid) as a key player. Dr Sethi is not against trying an HA serum made for skincare on your hair length but advises against direct scalp application.
What to Look For?
While many hair care products contain sodium hyaluronate (a hyaluronic acid derivative), Dr. Kiran suggests that using a hyaluronic acid serum designed for skincare on your hair lengths can also be effective. However, direct application to the scalp is not advisable.
How to Apply Hyaluronic Acid on Hair?
To ensure optimal results, it's crucial to give the hyaluronic acid something to adhere to, preventing it from stripping moisture from your hair. Dr. Kiran advises against directly applying hyaluronic acid to a dry scalp, as it may lead to stickiness. Instead, she recommends layering the serum with coconut oil, leaving it on for an hour before rinsing.
Alternatively, you can mix your hyaluronic acid serum with your conditioner or hair mask and apply it to damp hair lengths.
Pretty cool, right? Time to give hyaluronic acid a spin for those luscious locks!
