There are a few things more satisfying than finding a beauty DIY recipe. Sure, there are innumerable ingredients that are said to transform skin and hair but sifting through them to find your ultimate go-to can be a task. Luckily, certain ingredients work on all skin and hair types and yoghurt tops the list.
As a skincare DIY lover, please believe me when I tell you that there are a bunch of DIYs that can wreak havoc on your hair. If you have a sensitive scalp, baking soda will never be your friend and if you have dry hair, applying lemon juice on it will just make it drier. So, as someone who has slathered on several kitchen staples on her mane, I decided to cut through the terrible recipes on the internet and give you a bunch that actually work.
Benefits of using yoghurt on hair
• Yoghurt is rich in alpha hydroxy-acids that work hard to zap the dead skin cells, product build-up, dirt, and grime from the scalp.
• It contains protein that strengthens the hair shaft, preventing breakage.
• It is rich in fats that condition and softens hair.
• It has anti-fungal properties that may help reduce dandruff.
4 DIY yoghurt hair masks
For a flaky scalp, try a yoghurt + honey + banana hair mask
Bananas also have antimicrobial properties that can heal flakiness and dryness and along with honey and yoghurt, this mask moisturises the scalp. When applied to the lengths, it makes them soft and shiny. Mix all the ingredients together and apply. Wash off after 40 minutes and shampoo as usual.
For damaged hair, try a yoghurt + mayo + coconut oil + honey hair mask
This hair mask will give your mane major deep conditioning. This is because it contains proteins and moisture and together, they work to repair the hair. Take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and yoghurt each and to this add a teaspoon of honey and mayo. Mix well and apply on damp hair. Let it sit for 20 minutes and then wash it off.
For frizzy hair, try a yoghurt + fenugreek seed hair mask
If you’re dealing with frizzy hair that is prone to breakage, this mask might help. Fenugreek seeds are rich in folic acid, vitamin A, K, and C which nourish and strengthen hair. Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in three tablespoons of yoghurt overnight. The next day, grind the mixture and add a tablespoon of olive oil to it. Apply on hair and wash off after an hour.
For dull hair, try a yoghurt + olive oil hair mask
Who doesn’t love shiny, glossy hair? To make your mane look shinier, deep condition it with an olive oil and yoghurt mask. Mix three tablespoons of yoghurt with a teaspoon of olive oil and mix well. Massage this into your scalp and apply it to your lengths. Let it sit for 30 minutes and wash off.
What to keep in mind while using yoghurt on hair
If you have a milk allergy, you may want to check with your dermatologist before applying dairy-based products to your skin.
