Dust off your ribbons and bows, it’s time to dress up your hair! From messy buns to low ponytails, we all have our go-to hairstyles that we flaunt daily. But sometimes, certain events (or just a change in your mood) call for some levelling up and to do that, what you need is already at home–ribbons!
When wrapped around your hair, this accessory can immediately take a look from casual to chic, no extra maintenance required. Even though the trend was popularised by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo in the ’20s and ’30s, we’ve seen reiterations of it throughout the years, both on the runway and red carpet. If you’re confused about how to wear this little addition in your hair without looking like a schoolgirl or cheerleader (nothing wrong with looking like either, to be honest), here are eight ways to do it…
Secure that half-up, half-down ’do

Most recently spotted on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival 2021, was actor Diane Kruger who wore her tresses in a half updo. Simple, delicate and minimal.
Weave it in

Upgrade your braided bun the Billie Eilish way by weaving in a colourful ribbon into your hair. Wondering how to get started? Tie your hair in a low ponytail and secure it with a tight elastic. On this, tie your ribbon and braid the length of your mane. Loosen it using your fingers and twist and secure it at the base of the ponytail using bobby pins.
They work as elegant satin bands too

Whoever said short hair isn’t versatile needs to take learn a lesson or two from celebrity hairstylist, Mara Roszak. Here, she’s transformed supermodel Cara Delevingne’s pixie cut using a simple satin black ribbon proving that these hair accessories shouldn’t be reserved for long hair alone.
The rule is: More the merrier

Have fine hair but still want in on this trend? Here’s how to do it the Justine Marjan way: Secure your hair in two braided buns or twists, and secure them in the centre of your head and your nape. Then, bring out the velvet ribbons and bows and wrap them around your ’do, no precision required.
Use printed ribbons for contrast

Try this modern-day version of the side braided Frida Kahlo-esque hairstyle. As hairstylist Kristen Ess did, loop the ribbon and secure it with an elastic. Thread your hair through the loop and tighten it by pulling the ends. Use the remaining length to braid your hair and wrap it around your bun.
Play with textures

“When in doubt, put a bow in it,” said legendary hairstylist Jen Atkin, and we for one, believe her. If your locks are sleek or slicked back, add a velvet or any textured ribbon to play up your hair. Bonus points for coloured options!
End your braids with a ribbon

Spice up your messy side braid with a thick satin ribbon and end it with a bow for a finished look.
Add some drama with the length

Channel your inner Rapunzel with a long ribbon. If you’re going for this hairstyle, look for ribbons made of softer fabrics like net, satin or chiffon that cascade down the length of your hair. These won’t weigh it down the way heavier fabrics like velvet would.
