Whether it is motion sickness or a hangover, there is no denying that feeling nauseous can seriously put a damper on your day. If you’re looking for a solution to that queasy, uneasy feeling, we’ve put together some Ayurveda-approved remedies that may do the trick. Please note that these are not in any way a replacement for medical advice that your doctor may have given you.
What causes nausea?
There are several culprits behind this—think motion sickness, hangovers, morning sickness, indigestion, and sea-sickness. According to Ayurveda, nausea is caused by an imbalance of your doshas (building blocks in every individual), and this disparity can sometimes be righted at home by doing certain things.
5 home remedies to treat nausea
Chamomile tea
According to Ayurveda, chamomile or Matricaria chamomilla may be beneficial in managing stomach pain, nausea, or bloating. It acts as a strengthening tonic for the digestive system and calms and soothes the body from the inside and out.
How to have it: Brew a cup of warm tea using dried chamomile petals and consume.
Mint oil
Nausea—especially that caused by motion sickness—can be treated by inhaling some mint oil. If you don’t have that handy, anything mint flavoured may provide some respite too. This is because mint works well in calming all the doshas in the body and soothes the digestive tract.
How to have it: Make a mixture of crushed mint leaves, honey, and a few drops of lemon juice with warm water and sip on it.
Indian gooseberries
It is no secret that amla or Indian gooseberries are packed with vitamin C which enhances your body’s ability to absorb other nutrients. This fruit is a one-stopshop when it comes to treating any kind of stomach issue as it is also rich in fibre.
How to take it: If you wake up feeling nauseous, you can drink some amla juice on an empty stomach. Other options include amla candies, powder, and even pickles.
Sit in the Virasana pose
This yoga pose keeps the blood circulating in the body smoothly, reducing nausea. It strengthens the digestive system by eliminating gas and constipation.
How to do it: Sit on your knees and then bring your hips down as if you’re going to sit on a chair. Make sure you’re seated between your ankles and sit straight. Sit like this for at least a minute. If you have trouble sitting in this position, keep a pillow under yourself.
Ginger
This wonder ingredient neutralises stomach acids and provides relief from nausea. It also improves digestion and soothes irritated stomach lining. It is a known antiemetic (anti-vomit and nausea) and can be consumed in various forms.
How to have it: Grate it and have it with soup, drink ginger and lemon juice or try ginger candy.
